Portals

Portals facilitate instantaneous travel between two points, no matter how far apart. Stationary portals are large round objects operated by a panel with buttons. An active portal shakes and creates a humming, whirring sound, spilling out beams of multicolored light.

Types of Portals

Stationary Portals

These are basic portals, shaped similar to a large wheel of cheese. They, or at the very least their functionality, seem to be destroyed using fire.

Stationary Anchors

These can be attuned to as a travel destination from other portals. It is unclear whether one could travel from these anchors.

In Perfrind, the anchor point is a room with four floor-to-ceiling column-like structures in the corners of a special room.

The Perfrind stationary anchors seem connected to our orbs, which flashed when in proximity to it and transported us into the anchor room when a specific button was pressed. It is unknown how wide the range for this summoning effect is. It is possible this feature was created and used to wrangle creatures who got out of hand after our breakout.

Portable Portals

Portable Portal packs consist of:

  • Portable Anchors
  • Portable Transportation Device

These can be used to travel to-and-from different locations at will. The portable anchors must be physically placed at the desired locations for travel. The transportation device can be tuned to both stationary and portable anchors.

Travel can be initiated from any place using the transportation device to any anchor it is tuned to.

Additionally, Wash carries a mini teleportation device on his watch that operates something like a portal.

Portal Limitations

There may be some limitations to portals, as we experienced when not all of our party was able to Portal at once between Perfrind and Henderson’s cave near New Flavem when we were transporting Hestor and the other Planetars to (relative) freedom.

Portal Locations

Hedvika’s Mansion

A portal is found in Hedvika's Mansion on the north side of Gendry during the heist. The other side was some kind of shed or room. Wash suspected Hedvika was using it for smuggling, and Hedvika admits later he was using it for trade in Valdethirsk. This is possibly suspicious as we know that they had to wait on caravans to deliver goods back and forth while we were there, but portal dealings could certainly have been carried out secretly.

The party sets it on fire before leaving the mansion.

Hidden Laboratory Outside of New Flavem

In the ruins of hidden laboratory several days travel from New Flavem, which we find and destroy after dealing with a handful of turrets and bots. Wash calls the portal “garbage,” specifying to burn it, not break it.

Perfrind New Dawn Warehouse

We discover a sort of anchor portal located within the New Dawn Warehouse in Perfrind, to which we have tuned our portable portal as a location we can visit anytime.

References to Portals

According to a note dated in 5310, Hulderic says that one of the first uses of portals by New Dawn was to make secret research labs that we could remotely access. Likely, that explains the portal we found in the remote hidden laboratory.
