Into the Gray

Session Summary

We start our journey to New Flavem and keep an eye out for any clues or signs along the way. During our travel, we spot some humanoid creatures in the distance to the east, and Star transforms his familiar into an owl to investigate. The owl observes the creatures and notes that they disappear underground. We mark the location on our map and continue on without incident, taking turns on watch during the night. In the morning, we spot a caravan of food caravaners headed north and purchase some colorful mushrooms from them. We also learn about the treatment of magic users in New Flavem and arrive there on Tuesday night, where Elzira treats us to drinks as a thank you for helping with the bath.

I drop by the restaurant to say goodbye to my friends and ask whether they have any advice or knowledge about New Flavem for me. 

your friends tell you that you should be careful about using magic down south, as it's regulated down there, not sure about the specifics but you probably don't want to use it willy nilly until you know what's up

I pick up a bedroll and a healer’s kit before we head out. I gift my old quarterstaff to one of my friends at the restaurant.  #items

We head south first thing in the morning. It takes two days to get to New Flavem -2 days of rations.

The guard checks our paperwork and tells us to be safe out there, and sends us on our way. #encounters/guards

Twinkletoes tries to walk and read at the same time. She does so successfully!

I keep an eye out to see whether I see any more carvings in the trees, as well as possible movement. I don’t really see much.

Star transforms his familiar into an owl.

About a third of the day in, the owl sees some humanoid creatures in the distance to the East. They’re headed southeast. We decide to keep an eye on them. After a while it appears that they’ve disappeared down into the ground. #clues ^67744f

I mark a nearby tree and mark where we are on the map. It’s about half a day. 

The rest of the day’s travel goes without incident. We prepare for nighttime at 10pm. 

Our watch order is Elzira, Arachne, myself, then Star. 

I want to check for water nearby during my second shift of being awake, when Star is watching. 

Elzira hears nothing, Arachne hears large animals and tells me about it on my shift. I listen specifically for the noises to become a bigger sounding threat. It sounds like a fair number of large animals. They almost sound aimless.

I am averagely quiet and listen out for water sounds for Elzira, but hear nothing.

I tell Star about what I’m doing and he sends up his owl. The owl sees that there is in fact water in the form of a pond on the other side of the trees, but there are six owlbears milling around. #encounters/owlbears

The owlbears eventually wander off up north. 

The rest of the shift is uneventful. The familiar comes back having caught a mouse. 

I tell the whole camp about the water in the morning. We decide not to go to the water but I do use my Cook’s Utensils to spice up our rations. We all feel invigorated and know that there is a minor boon in our favor due to the meals.

Twinkletoes successfully reads her book again as we walk. We carry on as we did yesterday, I look out for markings and the owl looks for creatures.

Very early on we see a caravan headed our way going north. 

They turn out to be food transporters. They tell me about famous mushrooms from New Flavem. I ask if I can buy some. One of them pulls out a small package. They look like really colorful mushrooms. He sells it to me for 1gp. #items #costs #encounters/caravans

Star asks about people who use magic and how they’re treated in New Flavem. We learn that as long as we don’t use magic unsanctioned, we should be fine. 

As they head onward, I tell them to say hi to Tasha and make sure that Chef Linguine gets some of those mushrooms.

The rest of the trip is relatively uneventful. The owl notices that dirt has been disturbed like a creature had burrowed underground. The burrowing is on the east side of the road. Star climbs to see what he can see. It looks like the creature is completely underground and moving unexpectedly fast for something traveling through dirt. We arrive to New Flavem. It’s Tuesday night. Elzira wants to buy me and Star drinks as a thank you for our help with the bath.
