Into the Gray

Session Summary

Arachne and I keep watch when we see two Umber Hulks 120 feet away from the cave. We wake up the party, and everyone starts to move out quietly except for Star, who casts Darkness on his hand and tries to walk out after being slower to pack than everyone else. He later uses minor illusion to create a boulder and hide inside. Elzira uses the Enemies Abound spell. Wash fires Baja Blast, but both shots miss. After the in-fighting thanks to Elzira, the Umber Hulks stop, and we're able to escape without any further issues. We have 1.5 days more to town and only 6 hours until we reach the main road.

Nothing passes during the first ¾ of the night. It’s a clear night. Arachne and I take the final shift together. The back half of the cave is dark, where the night outside is starry and bright. 

Suddenly Arachne and I see two umber hulks 120 feet away from the cave.

She alerts me to their presence. We try to determine if they’re heading our way or just hanging out. It seems like they’re heading suspiciously directly at the cave, but they do not appear agitated. Arachne assumes they live here.

Arachne goes to wake up the party to move us, I keep watch.

Everyone is grabbing their stuff and heading out of the cave as quietly and quickly as possible.

Arachne is a little loud, and Star struggles to move quickly to grab his things. He slows down to get his bedroll. Elzara has to leave a shield behind. Otherwise, everyone else is able to move out without issue.

“Leave without me,” Star stage whispers. He casts Darkness on his own hand and attempts to just walk out.

I look around for somewhere to run off to and hide. I see a bit of wall of sand we could tuck behind. I make the SWAT hand motion and start sprinting off to the area.

Arachne is a little disturbed by the Darkness exiting the cave, but realizes it is probably Star. 

As Star gets to the entrance he can see us booking it off to the left. He tries to decide whether the Umber Hulk would follow his darkness bubble. He decides probably not and starts heading towards us. 

He looks back and sees the Umber Hulks have stopped and may be watching him. He starts booking it. They look directly at him. 

Arachne notices this and starts telling us to slow down. We turn around to prepare to help Star. Sylvia scowls. 

Elzara stands near Twinkletoes and Elzira, the squishy friends.

Wash walks forward about 30 feet and prepares to Baja Blast if they walk into range. 

Sylvia moves towards Star.

Star casts minor illusion of a large 5x5 foot boulder and runs inside of it and closes his hand.

I move up next to Sylvia to be ready to cast Slow on my next turn if necessary, wanting to avoid combat if possible.

The Umber Hulks dash towards where Star was last seen. They look confused by the boulder. During this, Wash fires off Baja Blast. Both shots miss.

Elzira casts Enemies Abound on the Umber Hulk closest to it. It appears to work!

Wash casts and strikes with Baja Blast for 17 damage.

Elzara, Sylvia, and Arachne move closer. 

Star fails a Charisma check but does nothing.

I look around to see if I can tell whether other Umber Hulk are heading our way. I do not see anything in the immediate area. I quicken and hold Slow for if they start attacking anyone friendly to me.

One of the UH looks intently at the boulder and starts digging at the ground underneath the illusion of the boulder. The second UH hits the other one viciously. 

Twinkletoes continues resting.

Elzira moves forward and tries to quickly explain his Enemies Abound spell. 

Wash Baja Blasts the unenchanted UH.

Elzara stands near Arachne.

Sylvia hangs out.

Arachne channels divinity which stands next to Sylvia. 

Star has his turn. He tries to sneakily walk away from the UH. 

I motion to everyone and say “Let’s go!” and prepare my action to book it once we’re all headed away assuming the UH don’t follow us.

One UH gently bites the other. Elzira then can feel his spell dissipate. The previously affected UH shrieks at the other. They continue bickering.

Twinkletoes is still chilling.

Elzira starts heading back towards the safe spot. 

Wash continues Baja Blasting. He misses. 

Elzara also starts heading out. 

Sylvia looks a little confused but also starts running in the right direction. 

Arachne moves her illusion to the opposite direction of where we are going to make sure the UH are less likely to notice us leaving. She then casts Sacred Flame potentially dealing 7 damage.

Once Arachne passes me I start to book it. On my turn I continue checking on the UH this time but otherwise continue running towards the safer spot. 

The UH are angrily swinging at the illusion of Arachne. 

Twinkletoes and everyone else continues moving out, except for Wash, who continues Baja Blasting. He manages to hit this time, dealing 7 damage. Arachne waits at the edge of her illusion’s range. She uses her illusion to cast Sacred Flame again. 

The UHs continue to interact with the illusion. They appear to begin realizing it isn’t real and are turning around.

We all continue leaving, except Wash, who takes another two shots. One hits, dealing 4 damage. Elzara hangs with Arachne. 

Arachne stays put and casts another Sacred Flame for 9 damage.

We all take a stealth check. (10, 8, 28, 4, 9, 15). The UH are looking around for us, but don’t seem to see where we might be. One wanders north, the other wanders towards us, but they are more meandering than chasing.

Arachne dismisses her illusion and focuses on hauling ass.

We all manage to reach the safer spot. It’s 4:45am. It’s at least half a mile from where we just came from. 

Arachne grants Guidance to Wash to help him find somewhere safe further away from the UH so that Twinkletoes can finish resting and use the Tiny Hut to protect everyone else. 

Wash is able to find a spot where it seems people would like to hide things. He is a little suspicious of traps and Baja Blasts the door. When he does this, nothing obvious occurs other than the door being blown in. Inside it looks like some old crates, some doors that lead further in. The immediate opening room seems empty otherwise. #clues

There are 6 owlbears about 4 miles out to the north east. I am made more alert to this. 

At 6am, Twinkletoes finishes her long rest. She joins me and is ready to cast the Tiny Hut if necessary.

I do see the group of owlbears nearby and they are getting water from a nearby source. 

Around noon, the ground starts shaking a lot. It starts subtle but gets stronger and stronger. It eventually passes and gets softer. #clues

Otherwise the time passes uneventfully. At 1:30pm everyone has finished their long rest. We are currently about a day and a half from town.

Wash is going to look around a little bit before we leave. We are about 6 hours travel from the road.
