Into the Gray

Session Summary

As we continue on our journey, Wash and Star's birds fly ahead to scout. After a few hours, they spot Umber Hulks in the distance heading in our direction. We discuss running but realize it's too late as they've already seen us. We prepare for battle, and Arachne casts Beacon of Hope on everyone. In the battle, we fight against the Umber Hulks, and Elzira and I deal significant damage with fire. Although Arachne's Guiding Bolt fails, she creates a Spiritual Weapon, and Star manages to take down two Umber Hulks with his bow. Wash also deals damage with his shortsword, but we sustain some injuries, with Elzara failing multiple charisma saving throws and running away. Finally, Arachne manages to kill the last Umber Hulk with Sacred Flame, and we emerge victorious. Elzara and Star have no real memory of the fight.

Star tries to cut off a branch to take with us on the journey from the magical tree. It weighs several pounds and is unwieldy. 

Walking order: Star & Wash, me & Twinkletoes, Elzara & Arachne

Both Wash’s bird/self and Star’s new hawk fly ahead to scout. Wash teases the bird in his bird form. 

Arachne uses Sending to contact April as we are traveling. “Just checking in!” “Dang this is you? This is really cool, dang, got it! Okay, so…” (Cuts off cause she doesn’t know the limitation.) “This is limited so you gotta keep it short and I only have so many of these.” “Got it. I’ll try to keep it short.” (Two level 3 slots.)

After about three hours of travel, the birds spot Umber Hulk in the distance. They are headed northwest (in our direction). 

They seem to sniff the ground sometimes and are walking at a normal speed. However, they don’t seem to be targeted towards us. We talk about running. Twinkletoes casts long strider on herself. 

Then we realize we took too long and they’ve gotten close and see us. 

I prepare Slow when they reach 120 feet. Arachne casts Beacon of Hope on everyone but Elzira cause he is too far. #encounters/umberhulk

INITIATIVE

I stand next to Arachne and prepare SLOW.

Elzira prepares Fire Ball. 

Arachne casts Mirror Image.

Star casts Minor Illusion of a rock and is inside of it. He sets up a bear hunting trap in front of him. He tosses it out and ends up chucking it way far. 

Wash stares at Star really hard. He moves behind the trap and prepares Eldritch Blast. 

Four of the UH move forward. Fire Bolt triggers (Twinkletoes, 8 damage). Fireball triggers (Elzira, 30 damage). Eldritch Blast triggers (7+2 damage). 

Elzara dashes and turns giant. 

I quicken firebolt and miss. I hold SLOW + move back again. 

Elzira casts Fire Ball again (32 damage). 

Arachne casts Guiding Bolt but NAT 1s it. Elzara makes a DEX saving throw. She manages to dodge. “We are both very sorry!” Arachne exclaims on behalf of herself and her deity. 

Star tries to shoot from his rock and thanks to advantage, hits and gets sneak attack (26 damage). 

Wash takes down one of the UH. He pulls out his shield.

Twinkletoes move towards Arachne and me and casts Fire Bolt (11 damage). 

My movement triggers as the UH approach. A UH attacks Elzara with its mandibles and claws. One claw hits for 10 damage. 

Elzara misses her CHA saving throw. She runs up to the North East her full movement.

I twin Chromatic Orb at the deadest one (19 damage, one misses). I quicken Fire Bolt but miss. 

Elzira misfires a Fire Bolt. Star manages to dodge it. 

Arachne manages her charisma save. She backs up to me and uses Channel Divinity to leave a duplicate where she was just standing. She casts her Spiritual Weapon but it misses.

Star takes a shot with his bow and deals 29 damage, that kills another UH. 

Wash goes to thwack the more injured UH we can see, dealing 10 damage. He prepares Misty Step. 

Twinkletoes is safe! She takes two shots with her crossbow. She hits one, dealing 4 damage. She also backs the hell out of there. 

One UH attacks Wash but he Misty Steps behind the Arachne clone. It follows him and attacks again, dealing 9 damage. 

Elzara fails another CHA check. She moves northwest. 

I land a Fire Bolt for 10 damage. I sacrifice a Level 2 spell slot for 2 Sorcery Points. 

Elzira circles and misses a Fire Bolt. 

Arachne attacks with her Spiritual Weapon but misses. She casts Sacred Flame, dealing 10 damage and killing the other UH. 

Star deals 22 damage with his bow from his fake rock.

Wash succeeds a CHA saving throw. He attacks with his shortsword and deals 10 damage.

Twinkletoes shoots with her crossbow and deals 10 damage. She misses and it flies towards Wash. He manages to evade it and not get hit. She stays very far away.

Wash gets hit twice for 20 damage. The other two burrow towards where Elzira is and pops out. 

Elzara moves forward and yeets her shield at one of the UH. She misses but it comes back to her. 

I cast Slow now that the others have popped up. It affects the two correct UH. SLOW 1

Elzira succeeds a CHA saving throw. He casts Thunder Wave (possible 7 damage). He then Misty Steps away and keeps running.

She swings at the unslowed UH with Spiritual Weapon for 7 damage. She then casts Sacred Flame dealing 10 damage and killing it.

 Star fails CHA saving throw but doesn’t do anything.

Wash succeeds his CHA saving throw. 

At this point the battle is won. We destroy them promptly. Elzara does not remember the fight, Star can’t quite remember either. The bird does not remember. It is noon on Tuesday.
