Into the Gray

Session Summary

We set up camp in a depression in the sand to rest and recover before detecting seven owlbears heading towards us. We decide to detour south and continue west to avoid them. We continue on our way, keeping a safe distance, and later encounter five land sharks to the east. We engage them in battle, using spells and weapons to fight them off. We successfully take them down, but not without injuries. One of the sharks injures Elzara and Arachne, but with a bit of healing magic from Arachne, Elzira's Fireball, and our combined attacks, we manage to defeat them. April continues to use too many words to reply to Arachne's use of Sending.

Wash looks for a spot for us to take a short rest. We find a depression in the sand to camp.

Folks heal up.

A few hours into traveling later, Wash’s ping shows 7 owlbears south west of our position. We are traveling west. 

He pings again in 15 minutes.

They are heading up north, 1 mile north of their previous location. 

We decide to try and go around them by cutting south for a bit then heading west again.

It seems we can avoid them by doing this. After about 45 minutes they’re out of range. 

Wash pings every half hour for a bit to make sure they stay out of range before going back to 2 hour pings, as we head west again.

We are arriving towards the end of the day after several more hours. 

Wash is also looking for water, but doesn’t find any. 

Wash pings again, and to the east of us about 3 miles out he senses five land sharks. 

We prepare for battle.

There is one land shark in front of the other land sharks. One’s head pokes out. 

Star takes pot shots as they approach. He finally lands one!

It then burrows completely underground, all are 120 feet away.

Arachne continues to hold Blink. 

Elzara turns giant and prepares to throw her shield. 

Elzira continues waiting for Fireball.

I hold Slow. 

Wash holds Baja Blast.

Twinkletoes preps Fire Bolt. 

The sharks move forward, which triggers Arachne’s Blink. She is now on the ethereal plane. BLINK 1

Star tries to be Stealthy.

Star casts Mirror Image, and succeeds but is no longer on the Ethereal Plane. BLINK 2, MIRROR 1

Elzara keeps holding. 

Elzira keeps holding.

I keep holding.

One of the sharks pokes its head up and shrieks. 

Star’s arrow misses. Twinkletoes hits 15 fire damage. Wash hits twice and deals 12+13. Elzara misses.

The other creatures all come forward now, but are still underground.

Star rolls a NAT 20 on stealth. He casts Minor Illusion to create a shrieking noise to disrupt their sonar if that’s how they’re finding us.

Arachne casts Spirit Guardians. BLINK 3, MIRROR 2, GUARDIANS 1

Elzara moves towards where the last shark came up and prepares to bonk heads.

Elzira holds Fireball.

I back up 40 feet and hold Slow for the three near us.

Wash holds Baja Blast.

Twinkletoes moves and holds Shatter.

Three of them congregate near the shriek. 

My Slow activates, affecting 2 of them. Elzara swings but misses. Wash hits for 11+13. Elzira’s Fireball deals 19 damage. Twinkletoes’ Shatter deals 12 damage.

Elzara gets hit by one of the sharks and fails a STR saving throw. She takes 28 damage and is knocked prone. Thankfully none of the other sharks hit her.

Arachne gets hit next, and she succeeds a DEX saving throw. She takes 11 damage and is still standing. Thanks to War Caster she holds onto her spells. BLINK 4, MIRROR 3, GUARDIANS 2

Wash gets attacked next, taking 15 damage.

Arachne moves 5 feet towards Elzara.

All the sharks are above ground. 

Star hits for 16+7 damage.

Arachne moves down to Elzara to Cure Wounds for 13 HP. She also heals Wash with Healing Word for 7 HP. Guardians deals 8 damage. BLINK 5, MIRROR 4, GUARDIANS 3

Elzara stands up. She swings at a shark, hitting once. She deals 9 damage. She Action Surges. She swings again! She hits another time, dealing 12 damage. 

Elzira casts Fireball again. He deals 25 damage.

I race up and use Fey Step to get close enough to hit a Shark, dealing 4 fire damage. I hit it with my quarterstaff (Green Flame Blade) dealing 19 damage to it, and then 9 fire damage to the one next to it. Then I step back still in the yellow zone.

Wash attacks and deals 11 damage. 

Twinkletoes shoots with a crossbow but misses. The second shot hits! She deals 10 piercing damage. She heals Wash for 7 HP. 

The sharks are back up. The one Twinkletoes shot dies from Spirit Guardians. The one I attacked also dies! There is a little bit of roaring.

Wash gets hit. 

One starts spinning. An unholy amount of dirt is being sprayed at high speed. Wash makes an 11 STR save. Elzara makes a 21 CON save. Arachne makes a 19 DEX save and succeeds a CON save for concentration thanks to War Caster. The total damage is 35 damage, halved for those who succeeded. It also kills one of the other sharks.

Wash is out for the count. 

Star shoots and manages to hit, killing the sharknado shark.

Arachne stabilizes Wash and then heals him for 4 HP. 

Elzara hits and deals 14 damage. This brings down the final land shark!

The front of the mouth doesn't really have teeth but there are 8inch long teeth in the back of the mouth. The creatures are almost like exoskeleton. The teeth in the front are for biting down and crunching. 

At first I fail to make the necklace but I use magical guidance to make sure that I don’t stab myself while doing so. 

Arachne finally messages April again. “Almost back to town. Much to discuss.” In response, “25 words, gotta keep it down to 25 words. Okay, I’ve been wordy I’m going to stop doing –”
