Meeting Vilma
Session 101: May 7, 2023
9 Fourtt, 5372 • Humbrey
Pharèl, Twinkletoes, Arachne, Elzara, Star, Wash
Session Summary
We arrive in Humbrey and visit a pub the night we arrive to find out what's happening in town. The barkeep informs us about a show called "Maddy's Hot New Show" coming up in a week or so and asks about our reason for visiting. We find out that there isn't much to do in Humbrey. We opt for the nicer of the two inns available. The next day, we meet our client, Vilma, who asks for our help in getting incriminating paperwork from New Dawn, an old company she thinks we wouldn't have heard of. We agree to help but have to make sure not to tell anyone of our mission. Vilma offers us information on the protective magic used in the building and a cash bonus of 1,400gp, double if we can do it without anyone finding out about the theft. We accept her conditions, and Vilma promises to get us more information the next day through her contact Danni. While waiting, I ask her about her favorite food, which is a good curry. Wash, Twinkletoes, and Star visit the target building which is covered in magic alarms and likely more. I go shopping for curry ingredients. Arachne visits a shrine and hears from her goddess, then wanders the city and sees how much more common magic usage is here.
Log
The night before, Wash heads off to a pub to listen to find out what’s going on and we all join. Wash starts by talking to the barkeep. “Unless you’re interested in a show, there’s not too much visitors will be interested in?”
Twinkletoes and I both chime in wondering about the show. I inquire about food and drink, it’s “Maddy’s Hot New Show” and it’s going to play in about a week. The barkeep inquires as to why we’re in town. I just say I love traveling and helping people.
Star asks if they know about the markings. The barkeep sighs and calls the south a clown show. They haven’t had such problems up here.
Kai meets us and tells us we’ll meet Vilma in the morning.
We learn that there isn’t a lot to do in Humbrey. We find two inns, one standard 5sp/night and one cheaper 1sp/night. We opt for the nicer inn.
It is the morning after we arrive to Humbrey. Our goal is to meet our contact to commit crimes in order to get a battery for the safe.
Kai takes us to what is probably the nicest, as in fanciest, building in town. It feels mansion-like in feeling, but not the size of one, though still large. We are escorted inside. We are taken to Vilma, a human woman with brown hair in around her 40s.
She gestures to the side and another person. “Firstly, I’d like to make sure I have at least a little extra trust here. If you don’t mind, this will be all in a Zone of Truth.”
I nod and say “Of course! We are nothing if not trustworthy.”
There is some grumbling and consideration amongst the rest of the group. Wash is the only one who actually resists the save. The wizard whispers to Vilma, who then calls Kai over and they excuse themselves to a side room for about a minute or so.
Vilma asks the wizard if anyone is attempting to lie, and the wizard says no.
“I just want to make sure very quickly that you aren’t going to, let’s say, share information unncessarily.”
We agree.
She wants paperwork without a paper trail, it seems, on an old company… New Dawn.
My eyes widen, but I say nothing. (Performance check: 16)
“There are just some things, if someone reviews certain aspects of it, could turn unfortunate for me. I would like the original document. It’s going to be from the building here. Unfortunately there is more security than you would expect from such a small town. I’ve been told you can be resourceful. Can you do this without anyone knowing you’ve been there?”
We all agree, if somewhat hesitantly from some people.
“If you don’t succeed, make it look like a robbery for something else. But ideally I just want the paperwork to go missing.“
She says once we get in, no one should be in the section.
Wash asks what her interest is in the papers and regarding New Dawn. Arachne tries to insightful determine whether her intentions are nefarious. She gets the sense that it connects her to something that must be scandelous at least. Arachne is convinced she had parents or family involved.
She says it’s not our business but it is of Conqelian nature.
Wash asks for details and a timeline. She says she would appreciate it being done within the next two weeks she will give a cash bonus in addition to the item, like 1,000gp. Wash counters for something divisible by 7, so she offers 1,400gp (200gp each). She says if we take too long she will rescind the offer entirely. Wash asks if there are any assets in town we should be aware of.
She offers to get us information on the protective magic they use. The people she’s hired so far are not so well versed in the ways of magic. She says she will double the money reward if there is no indication that we were ever there (other than the missing papers). Please do not loot the place, she begs.
Wash says we need the information and figure out whether loud or quiet is actually possible. Robbing the joint is most likely the best way to ensure no one realizes the papers were the actual target.
She says she can acquire resources for us if necessary and she agrees with our assessment. The person who can give us all the detailed information should be available the next day.
The building is towards the north end of the town. They mostly store important city papers. Her long-term plan is to get a mole in to work at the building.
I ask what her favorite food is, she loves a good curry. I take note to make her some while we wait on intelligence gathering.
“If you have anything else… not that I question the forward-thinking nature of this group, please send Kai for contact with me rather than coming in as a group.”
Wash warns her I’d be there in two days with curry.
We’ll meet the contact Danni the next morning over breakfast at Garion’s place, an unnamed restaurant.
We have the day to spend time in town:
- Pharèl: Looks for curry ingredients
- Wash, Twinkletoes, Star: Go to town hall
- Arachne: Goes to shrine and prays for direction from her goddess regarding New Dawn and whether she should be on the lookout for anything, then wanders the town with Detect Magic
Wash asks if there is any paperwork we need to fill out. “Oh, you won’t have to worry about that unless you plan to stay more than half a year or moving in.”
The man has heard rumors that they may start tracking comings and goings at certain times, be he says perhaps only the south actually needs that.
Using the goggles, Twinkletoes sees there are doors already having some magic on them, the people who use the doors use magical keys. There seems to be some basic preventative alarm magic prepared as well.
Not much else is of note, security wise.
Wash’s crows fly around. There are windows but none seem to lead into storage areas.
To get the nicest curry supplies for 1gp, which I purchase. #cooking
Arachne sees a bunch of magic shenanigans, it seems much more day-to-day use. More cast spells than magical items.
